Dr Webster speaks on Emerging Solutions in Pain: How Often do you Order Urine Drug Tests?

I am often asked how often we should perform urine drug tests. Well, my response is
that today we probably need to perform urine drug tests far more than we have in the
past. I think that it is becoming a standard of care in patients that are receiving chronic
opioid therapy. I order urine drug tests on all new patients to my clinic. I have a tertiary
center, but I think individuals who are going to be placed on chronic opioid therapy
should probably routinely have urine drug tests at least annually and in anyone who
displays aberrant behaviors, there probably should be a repeat urine drug test. The
urine drug test is probably the single best diagnostic tool to help detect aberrant
behaviors if it’s not observed by you as the clinician or by your staff.
