Clip compliments of KSL Television Alice Jackson, CEO of Lifetree Clinical Research brings you up-to-date information on how you can help on a clinical study and why these studies benefit all of us. What is a bunion?
What causes a bunion?
An inherited tendency - it is not the bunion itself that is inherited, but certain foot types that make a person prone to developing a bunion. Arthritis Shoes with high heels or pointed toes, shoes that don't fit properly or shoes that are too tight. While the shoes don't actually cause the bunions, they sometimes make a deformity worse.
What
are the symptoms of a bunion?
What treatment options exist to treat a bunion? A bunionectomy is performed when conservative means of addressing the problem, including properly fitting, wide-toed shoes, a padded cushion against the joint, orthotics, and anti-inflammatory medication, are unsuccessful. As the big toe moves sideways, it can push the second toe sideways as well. This can result in extreme deformity of the foot, and the patient may complain not only of significant pain, but of an inability to find shoes that fit.
