LIFETREE CLINICAL RESEARCH® OFFERS
HUMAN EXPERIMENTAL PAIN MODELS FOR CLIENTS
Salt Lake-based company adds research services to assess efficacy of new analgesic drugs

Salt Lake City—Lifetree Clinical Research®, one of the largest specialized clinical research organizations in the Western region of the United States, is expanding its services to include a broader range of human experimental pain models to assess the efficacy of new analgesic drugs. The company is adding three models:  Cold Pressor, Neurometer®/QST, and Heat/Capsaicin.
"Lifetree Clinical Research® staff members have long been pioneers in the development of robust human pain models to assess the efficacy of new analgesic drugs,” said Lifetree Clinical Research® Founder and CEO Alice Jackson. "In today’s environment of continual strategic portfolio assessments, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies are looking for earlier indications of efficacy during human safety testing.  Lifetree is responding to this need, and the company is pleased to offer our clients models of experimental pain with which analgesic activity can be demonstrated in Phase I trials in healthy volunteers.”
In the cold pressor model, healthy volunteers submerge their non-dominant hand in ice cold water (2 to 3 degrees C).  Specific endpoints are recorded and demonstrate the efficacy of new drug candidates or formulations.  The Neurometer®/QST model uses a Neurometer® device as a method of quantitative sensory testing (QST).  Selected nerve fibers are activated by electronic stimulation in various intensity levels that can determine pain threshold and tolerance.  This technique can be used to determine analgesic efficacy of investigational products.  The Heat/Capsaicin model uses moderate heat in combination with capsacin to elicit hyperalgesia and allodynia which resemble chronic neuropathic pain conditions.  With appropriate methodology, the response is stabilized and allows for the testing of investigational products.
